Kabul 24<\/a>: The Israeli army can now use its presence there to monitor and oversee a larger area of southern Lebanon.The Israelis first captured Beaufort Castle during the initial wave of the invasion of Lebanon in June 1982.<\/p>\nThe capture followed intense and heavy fighting against an elite unit of Palestinian fedayeen. Before the Golani Brigade\u2019s assault, Yasser Arafat personally visited Beaufort to emphasize the resistance of the fedayeen and the symbolic importance of the castle.<\/p>\n
Eighteen years later, after years of resistance and a war of attrition by Hezbollah, the Israeli army was forced to withdraw from southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Following this defeat, the Israeli base at Beaufort fell into the hands of Hezbollah fighters and became a symbol of Israel\u2019s failure in its territorial occupation of southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, Israel\u2019s renewed advance into southern Lebanon and its strategic boldness in this regard represent a major shift in its policy.Has Tel Aviv abandoned its policy from two decades ago, which involved withdrawing from the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon?<\/p>\n
Between 2000 and 2005, Israel, by weighing the heavy costs of territorial occupation and its inability to convert military superiority into strategic dominance, effectively handed control of these two areas over to Hamas and Hezbollah.<\/p>\n
Following the October 7 attack and the subsequent developments that led to direct war with Iran, Israel\u2019s security perception and strategic logic changed.<\/p>\n
Israel, having failed to achieve its main objectives of disarming Hamas and Hezbollah, has returned to its previous tactics. The difference now is that under the cover of a ceasefire, it continues the war through quiet occupation and the creation of so-called buffer zones.<\/p>\n
The main question is: how far does Israel intend to go? Will it also advance toward Hezbollah\u2019s bases in the Beqaa Valley and southern Beirut?If so, what will it do with the consequences of entering a war of attrition and falling into a political quagmire?<\/p>\n
Assuming this scenario occurs, how can the United States separate the Lebanon file from its negotiations with Iran and the deadlock over the Strait of Hormuz?<\/p>\n
Is Netanyahu\u2019s main goal to pressure Hezbollah, or the Lebanese government, in order to place it in a weaker position in the ongoing negotiations?<\/p>\n
If this scenario is on the agenda, what is the difference between it and the bitter experience of 1982? At that time, Sharon managed to expel Arafat and the PLO from Beirut and signed a peace agreement with Bashir Gemayel, the president at the time.<\/p>\n
But shortly afterward, Gemayel was assassinated, and from the ruins of western Beirut, in the absence of the Palestinian fedayeen, Hezbollah rose like a phoenix.There is no doubt that the capture of Beaufort Castle is an important achievement for Israel and a major blow to Hezbollah.<\/p>\n
However, this tactical victory cannot solve the unresolved puzzle of converting military victory into strategic achievement, political hegemony, and the eradication of Hezbollah\u2019s spiritual and political influence.<\/p>\n
The 1,200-year history of Beaufort Castle is instructive in this regard. This medieval fortress, built by the Crusaders during the Crusades, fell in 1192 to Saladin Ayyubi, the Kurdish Muslim commander, and became a symbol of Muslim victory.<\/p>\n
Sixty years later, the Crusaders recaptured it. Afterward, it repeatedly changed hands among the Mamluks, Ottomans, French, Palestinians, then the Israelis, followed by Hezbollah<\/a>, and now the Israeli army once again.<\/p>\nThis cycle can continue, but at the exorbitant cost of instability, the spread and continuation of chaos in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
