The World Bank has organized a two-day workshop in Dubai to discuss “strengthening the payment system” in Afghanistan.
Kabul24: Melinda Goode, head of the World Bank office in Afghanistan, has said that more than a hundred experts from domestic and international banks, digital providers, international partners and civil society are in attendance.
The primary aim of the workshop is to find ways to strengthen the payment system in Afghanistan to revitalize the private sector and create jobs that will help improve the lives of Afghan citizens.
A reliable payment system creates trust
Goode has also highlighted the importance of a reliable and transparent payment system to create trust among the citizens.
She has further underlined that strengthening the payment system will not only help ensure that aid reaches the people of Afghanistan but also will help the private sector in employing Afghan citizens.
The head of the World Bank office in Afghanistan has called for participants to come up with solutions to the current challenges facing Afghanistan’s payment system.

Payment system crucial for revival of economy
Melinda Goode considers strengthening the payment system as vital for the revival of the economy and the improvement of the lives of Afghan citizens.
Following the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan’s banking system was disrupted, pushing many banks to the brink of bankruptcy. In response to the economic crisis, the Taliban limited the withdrawal of money from the banks.
As a result, many bank customers suffered hardships, and many businesses had to shut down. The workshop will also be discussing how to help the banking system regain autonomy and support independent financial institutions.
