The head of UNAMA’s political office in Kabul, Scott Smith, met with the chief of the Taliban prime minister’s office, Mawlawi Zakir, on Wednesday.
Kabul24: During the meeting, Smith revealed plans for an upcoming UN-organized gathering in a format similar to the Doha meeting, which is expected to take place in late 2023.
According to a Persian statement released by the office of the Taliban prime minister, Smith informed that the Taliban officials will be invited to participate in this meeting.
Smith emphasized the importance of mutual understanding between the Taliban and the international community and assured that UNAMA is actively working towards fostering understanding and bridging the gap between the group and the rest of the world.
Mawlawi Zakir expressed the Taliban’s desire for understanding and engagement with the international community. He also stressed the need for the international community to lift banking restrictions and complete unfinished projects.
The Doha meeting, which took place in early May, was hosted by the UN Secretary-General and the participation of special envoys from countries involved in Afghanistan affairs.
As stated by the UN, the objective of the meeting was to develop a common international approach to Afghanistan issues.
