Widespread Destruction of Poppy Fields in Badakhshan Sparks Action and Concern

In response to protests in Argo and Darayim districts in Badakhshan, a significant effort to eradicate poppy fields has been initiated, with local officials reporting the clearance of around forty thousand acres of agricultural land.
Extensive Efforts and Deployment of Security Forces

Kabul 24: Deputy Governor Aminullah Taib disclosed that an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 jeribs of land have been affected by the destruction of poppy plants, with over two thousand Islamic Emirate security forces actively engaged in the eradication process.

Collaborative Measures and Progress

Mahbubullah Hamed from the Third Omar Division highlighted the involvement of a thousand national army personnel in the eradication efforts, while Farooq Nabard of the Eighth Border Brigade noted successful destruction of over two thousand jeribs of land in Argo district without significant challenges.

Calls for Support and Alternatives

Amidst the destruction, farmers are voicing concerns and urging the interim government to provide alternative livelihood options. Shafiq Rahman emphasized the need for job opportunities for the educated and compensation for farmers, while Abdul Basit highlighted the desperation driving some towards poppy cultivation due to a lack of employment opportunities.

Ongoing Campaign and Future Plans

Although specific figures on poppy cultivation remain unclear, local authorities in Badakhshan are committed to continuing the eradication campaign until all poppy fields in the province are eliminated, signaling a concerted effort to address the issue of illicit drug production in the region.
