Preparing for NATO Summit
In preparation for the upcoming NATO summit, Zelenskiy disclosed that he and Starmer aligned their stances, aiming to explore potential measures for Ukraine to progress towards securing membership in the Alliance.
A senior US official disclosed that NATO allies would introduce a ‘bridge to membership’ for Ukraine at the Washington summit and announce measures to enhance its air defense capabilities.
Strengthening Air Defenses
In efforts to strengthen its air defense capabilities, Ukraine aimed to double its capacity over the summer, with recent progress becoming apparent. The country received its third Patriot system from Germany, complementing contributions from other nations like the US and Germany. Various systems, including US Hawk and German Iris, are utilized by Ukraine to counter Russian drones, missiles, and aircraft.
Criticism of Orbán’s Moscow Visit
Ukraine and its allies in the West criticized the pro-Kremlin Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, following his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
This visit followed Orbán’s unannounced trip to Kyiv as part of his efforts to position himself as a mediator for peace. The EU leadership in Brussels swiftly condemned Orbán’s visit, emphasizing that he lacked a mandate from the EU council to engage in discussions with Moscow and did not represent the EU.
Ongoing Russian Attacks
In the eastern frontline Donetsk region of Ukraine, Russian assaults led to the death of eight individuals and left at least 28 others injured.
The regional governor reported casualties in the town of Selydove and the village of Komar, resulting from Russian guided bomb attacks.
Significant damage to residential and infrastructure facilities was noted in the aftermath of the assaults.
