Nuruddin Azizi’s letter to Yuri Ushakov states: “We are accompanied by a high-ranking delegation including Abdul Ghani Baradar; Deputy Prime Minister, we are interested in the BRICS meeting.
The main members of the BRICS group are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
This group expanded with the membership of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Iran and Ethiopia at the beginning of this year.
Russia has announced that the upcoming meeting will focus on the development of cooperation in three key areas: political and security, economic and financial, and cultural.
Omar Celik, the spokesman of the ruling Justice and Development Party, led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said: “Our president has clearly stated that Turkey wants to be present in all important forums, including BRICS.”
He declined to confirm reports on whether Ankara had formally applied to join the group, but said “a process is underway.”
If Türkiye is invited to join BRICS, it will be the first NATO member country to join this non-Western economic alliance led by Russia and China.
