The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a significant increase in the number of Afghans returning to their homeland. In the past two weeks, 86,678 individuals have returned from Iran and Pakistan, surpassing the 57,193 who left Afghanistan during the same period.
Kabul 24: The IOM attributes this surge to deportations and voluntary returns, particularly following the Arbaeen religious holiday. Many Afghans are returning after facing challenges abroad, including forced deportations from neighboring countries like Iran and Türkiye.
Challenges Faced by Afghan Refugees
Afghans in Iran and Türkiye report numerous difficulties, including poor living conditions in detention camps. Ahmad Faisal, an Afghan in Türkiye, highlighted the harsh treatment faced by detainees, while Omid Hasani noted that even documented individuals are at risk of deportation in Iran.
Border Crossings Used for Returns
Returnees have utilized various border crossings, including Islam Qala and Torkham, amidst a backdrop of increasing deportations from both Iran and Pakistan.
