Activity of Approximately 4,000 Greenhouses in Herat

Officials from the Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock of Herat Province report that around 95% of the province’s market needs for vegetables and fruits are currently being met through greenhouse production during this season.

kabul 24: Bashir Ahmad Ahmadi, Head of Agricultural Affairs at the Directorate, stated that approximately 4,000 greenhouses are currently active across various districts of the province.

These facilities produce a diverse range of agricultural products throughout different seasons of the year.

According to Mr. Ahmadi, these greenhouses have successfully supplied a significant portion of Herat’s market demand for fresh vegetables and certain fruits.

The Head of Agricultural Affairs emphasized that the expansion of greenhouse farming has played a crucial role in ensuring the stability of agricultural production and preventing shortages of products during cold and dry seasons.

Meanwhile, agricultural experts, pointing to climate change, consider the increase in greenhouse cultivation to be an effective strategy for achieving sustainable and diverse agricultural production.

However, some farmers engaged in greenhouse farming report that their yields have increased through this method. They are calling on the government for greater cooperation, including the distribution of agricultural equipment and support in stabilizing the prices of greenhouse products.

It is worth noting that greenhouse cultivation not only boosts yields but also enables the production of vegetables and fruits throughout all seasons of the year.

This development highlights the growing importance of protected agriculture in Herat, especially given the province’s challenging climate and the need for year-round food security. Earlier reports (from around 2021) mentioned about 1,500 greenhouses, suggesting significant growth in recent years.
