Trailblazing Afghan-Australian Appointed as Multicultural Ambassador
Rita Anwari Sultani, an Afghan-origin civil society activist and entrepreneur residing in Australia, has been named as a Multicultural Ambassador by Cricket Australia.
Kabul 24: Sultani is the founding director of the Afghanistan-Australia Chamber of Commerce and Investment as well as the Women Empowerment and Leadership organization.
Arriving in Australia in 1993, Sultani has transformed from a migrant girl to a prominent women’s rights champion over the past three decades.
Empowering Afghan Cricketers in Australia
In her new role, Sultani aims to help unite, train, and support Afghan cricketers living in Australia to reach higher levels of the sport.
“We have got strong and talented Afghan players living all across Australia, and they are still playing in an individual capacity, so my efforts would be to listen to them and provide them a platform for support and growth,” Sultani said.
Promoting Cricket Diversity in Australia
Cricket Australia stated that in this role, Sultani will strive to promote cricket among the country’s bustling multicultural communities.
Her dedication to empowering women and advocating for their rights has earned her international recognition and prestigious awards.
According to Cricket Australia’s Multicultural Action Plan, 18% of cricketers in Australia are of South Asian background, but they only make up 4% of players contracted to state and territory teams.
“Cricket Australia wants to be a sport for everyone, and so we are really looking at increasing the opportunities for multicultural people across all aspects of cricket,” said Sonya Thompson, Cricket Australia’s head of national development.
