UN Reports Record High of 110 Million Displaced People, 5.7M from Afghanistan Alone
Kabul24: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) released a report today confirming a staggering total of 110 million displaced individuals worldwide due to various factors such as conflict, persecution, and natural disasters.
The report shows that at the end of 2022, 108.4 million people across the globe were displaced, which marks the largest annual increase on record.
Afghanistan Records 5.7 Million Displaced People
The UNHCR confirms that out of the 110 million total displaced worldwide, 5.7 million individuals are from Afghanistan alone, with more expected to flee the country as the Taliban extend their control in Afghanistan.
Syria, Ukraine, and Afghanistan Account for 52% of Displaced People
According to the report, 52 percent of refugees and individuals requiring international assistance come from only three countries – Syria, Ukraine, and Afghanistan.
Syria currently homes 6.5 million displaced individuals, Ukraine houses over 11.6 million due to the ongoing conflict with Russia, and Afghanistan now has 5.7 million, with many more likely to follow as the situation worsens.
Taliban Takeover Causes Large-Scale Migration in Afghanistan
The increasing influence of the Taliban since the August 2021 takeover of Afghanistan has led to a significant rise in Afghani citizens fleeing the country. Most of these migrants have headed towards neighboring countries, such as Iran and Pakistan.
In conclusion, the UNHCR report paints a bleak picture of the current global displacement situation, with millions of individuals being forced to flee their homes worldwide.
