Afghans are at the top of the list of asylum seekers crossing the English Channel

According to a statistical report published by the refugee support organization in Britain called “Refugee Council”, by the end of August 2023, 4 thousand 69 Afghan citizens and 2 thousand 250 Iranian citizens crossed the English Channel and by boats. have fled to Britain.

From this number, 97 Afghans and 74 Iranians have been granted refugee status, and it is expected that another 1,665 Afghans and 1,760 Iranians will also receive refugee status.

With the continuation of the current trend, out of a total of about 20,000 asylum seekers who have reached Britain through the English Channel in 2023, three out of four people will be recognized as refugees.

This is more than the Refugee Council estimates of those who will be granted refugee status in 2022. According to statistics, almost two-thirds of the total number of asylum seekers crossing the English Channel received asylum last year.

Information released by the British Home Office also shows that more than half (54 percent) of those who crossed the dangerous English Channel were from just five countries: Afghanistan, Iran, Eritrea, Syria and Sudan.

With the exception of Albanians, the number of people who crossed the canal in 2023 was higher than in 2022. After Afghanistan and Iran, the citizens of Turkey, Eritrea, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, India, Vietnam and Egypt are next in this list.

In recent months, the British authorities have made great efforts to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country. British Prime Minister Rishi Sonak has named “stopping the boats carrying migrants” and preventing them from entering the country as one of his government’s priorities.
