Bennett: It is necessary to prevent attacks and protect Shiites

Richard Bennett, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights, whose responsibility has recently been extended in Afghanistan, has called for the prevention of such attacks and the protection of the Shiite community in response to a suicide attack on Shiites in Baghlan Province.

According to Kabul 24; An explosion occurred yesterday (Friday, 21 Mizan) during the Friday prayer at the Imam Zaman Shiite mosque on the first Silavi road in Pul Khumri city, Baghlan center. ISIS has claimed responsibility for this explosion.

According to the latest information provided to the media by a source in Baghlan provincial hospital, 21 people were killed and 40 were injured in this explosion.

Richard Bennett has condemned this attack and expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims.

Mr. Bennett wrote in a message on X (former Twitter) last night: “Prevention, protection and accountability are needed for the Shiite population of Afghanistan who continue to be targeted.”

Previously, the members of the Afghan Shiite community in mosques, public places, educational centers and hospitals have been the targets of targeted attacks.

Last year, a suicide attack on a school in the west of Kabul caused global protests. The protesters considered the attacks against the Shias as an example of genocide and demanded its recognition.

Reaction to Pul Khomri attack

In response to yesterday’s attack on worshipers, Nasir Ahmad Faiq, head of Afghanistan’s delegation to the United Nations, said that continuing suicide and terrorist attacks in mosques and targeting civilians and worshipers has no religious or rational justification.

He wrote in X: “These terrorist acts are the result of teaching and promoting violent thoughts, extremism and terrorism in Jihadi schools.”

In response to yesterday’s explosion, Mohammad Mohaghegh, the leader of the Afghan People’s Unity Party, said that such acts are a plan of the current rulers or the result of the growth of extremist and takfiri groups in Afghanistan, which are being produced in the shadow of the Taliban government.

He asked A.A. to stop these anti-human acts. He has also requested the United Nations and human rights organizations to investigate the killing of “oppressed and oppressed” Shiites.
