Erdoğan Calls for International Aid for Afghan Flood Victims at Festival in Ankara

At the Seventh “International Benevolence Awards Ceremony” in Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on world countries to provide assistance to the victims of recent devastating floods in Afghanistan.

The floods, which have hit several provinces in the country, have resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with over 400 lives lost and significant damage to infrastructure and livelihoods.

UN Emphasizes Fragile Humanitarian Situation in Afghanistan

Kabul 24: Edem Wosornu, director of OCHA’s Operations and Advocacy Division, highlighted the dire situation in Afghanistan, stating that 23 million people are in need of humanitarian aid this year, five times more than in 2019.

She emphasized the need for continued support, particularly for women and girls, as well as sustainable solutions, including livelihood and agricultural support.

Affected Residents Plead for Assistance

Shah Wali, a resident of Karkar town in Pul-e-Khumri, expressed frustration at the lack of government and private aid reaching the affected areas. He stated that no officials have visited the area to assess the damage or provide support to the victims.

International and Domestic Aid Efforts

Various domestic charitable organizations, departments of the Islamic Emirate, civil organizations in Turkey, and businessmen have provided humanitarian aid to the flood victims. Countries such as Turkey, Iran, Qatar, Russia, Japan, and Uzbekistan have also offered initial assistance.

Widespread Devastation Across Multiple Provinces

According to statistics from the Ministry of Disaster Management, devastating floods have hit the provinces of Baghlan, Faryab, Ghor, Sar-e-Pul, Badakhshan, Takhar, Samangan, Herat, Badghis, Laghman, Bamyan, Farah, Nuristan, and Kapisa in the past two weeks.

The Turkish president’s call for international aid and the UN’s emphasis on the fragile humanitarian situation in Afghanistan highlight the urgent need for a coordinated response to support the flood victims and address the long-term challenges facing the country.

As the affected residents plead for assistance, it is crucial for the international community to step up and provide the necessary support to alleviate the suffering and rebuild the affected communities.
