Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) has reported that intense snowfall and heavy rainfall over the past three days have caused significant loss of life and widespread damage across multiple provinces.
Kabul 24: According to the latest official figures released on January 24, 2026, 61 people have lost their lives, while 110 others have been injured.
These casualties stem primarily from roof collapses under heavy snow, flash floods, landslides, and other weather-related incidents. The affected provinces include Kabul, Parwan, Panjshir, Bamyan, Daikundi, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Herat, Ghor, Badghis, Faryab, Sar-e-Pol, Balkh, Samangan, and Nuristan.
Beyond human suffering, the extreme weather has inflicted severe material losses. ANDMA confirmed that 458 residential houses have been fully or partially destroyed, leaving 360 families displaced or in urgent need of shelter.
Additionally, 620 head of livestock perished in the disaster, dealing a heavy economic blow to rural and pastoral communities already struggling with harsh winter conditions.
Authorities noted that these numbers are preliminary and based on initial assessments. Many remote areas remain cut off due to blocked roads, deep snow accumulation, and ongoing bad weather, complicating rescue efforts and the delivery of emergency aid.
Search and relief operations continue in coordination with local teams. This latest natural disaster highlights Afghanistan’s ongoing vulnerability to intense seasonal weather patterns, exacerbated by climate change, limited infrastructure, and challenging terrain.
The Taliban-led administration and humanitarian organizations have appealed for immediate international assistance to support affected families with food warm clothing, temporary shelter, and medical care.
