Islamic Emirate and Turkmenistan Strengthen Ties with TAPI Project Launch

On September 11, 2024, Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, Prime Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, announced the commencement of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project in Herat. He emphasized that this initiative will significantly enhance relations between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, showcasing the commitment of both nations to foster friendship and cooperation.

Kabul 24: Akhund remarked, “Today is the day we have been waiting for, for years,” highlighting the project’s importance after years of challenges.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Turkmenistan’s President, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, participated in the ceremony via video link, reiterating the importance of the TAPI project for regional connectivity and energy security. He stated that the project not only benefits Afghanistan but also strengthens ties across the region. The TAPI pipeline, which will transport natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to India, is expected to bolster economic cooperation and stability in South Asia.

Historical Relations and Future Prospects

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, the national leader of Turkmenistan, emphasized the historical ties between the two countries, asserting that the TAPI project symbolizes true brotherhood. He noted that the pipeline will create approximately 12,000 jobs in Afghanistan and generate around $1 billion annually, significantly contributing to the country’s economic development. The project is seen as a pivotal step toward enhancing regional security and connectivity, linking Central Asia with South Asia.
