Israel Launches Limited Military Operation in Rafah, Sparking International Concern

Israel has launched a military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, seizing control of the border crossing there.

Kabul 24: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated this was an important step in dismantling Hamas’ military and economic capabilities, as well as securing the release of Israeli hostages

Targeted Operation, Not Full-Scale Invasion

The US National Security Council has clarified that this is not a full-scale ground invasion, as previously threatened by Israel. Instead, it is a targeted operation aimed at disrupting Hamas’ ability to smuggle weapons and funds into Gaza

Humanitarian Concerns

The Rafah crossing is a critical entry point for humanitarian aid into Gaza. Over 1.4 million Palestinians, more than half of Gaza’s population, have sought refuge in Rafah after being displaced from other parts of the strip. Many live in squalid conditions with limited access to essentials

A senior Hamas official condemned the Israeli operation as a “serious crime” and “flagrant violation of international law”

The UN Secretary-General warned a full-scale invasion of Rafah could create a “humanitarian nightmare”

Closure of Gaza’s Aid Arteries

With the Rafah crossing now blocked, and Israel having closed the Kerem Shalom crossing last week, the UN has stated that Gaza’s two main aid conduits have been cut off

However, the White House said Israel has indicated Kerem Shalom will reopen on Wednesday.
