Nawaz Sharif Reelected as President of Ruling Party in Pakistan

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been reelected as the president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) party, a position he last held in 2017 before being forced out of office amid corruption allegations.

Kabul 24: The PML-N came into power following the Feb. 8 elections, which Sharif’s key rival, former premier Imran Khan, alleged were rigged.

Sharif’s Younger Brother Leads Coalition Government

Sharif’s younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, currently leads a coalition government in Pakistan, while Sharif himself is a member of Parliament. Nawaz Sharif was previously ousted from power in 2017 when the Supreme Court disqualified him from holding any public office over concealing financial assets, a charge he denies.

However, his conviction and sentences were overturned last year, allowing him to hold any public or party office once again.

Sharif Returns from Self-Imposed Exile in London

Sharif returned to Pakistan in October from self-imposed exile in London, where he went in 2019 for medical treatment when Khan was in power. Khan was later ousted through a no-confidence vote in 2022 and is currently serving multiple prison terms.

PML-N Aims to Consolidate Power Under Sharif’s Leadership

With Nawaz Sharif’s reelection as the PML-N party president, the ruling party aims to consolidate its power and continue its political agenda under the leadership of the former prime minister.

The move comes at a crucial time for Pakistan, as the country faces economic challenges and ongoing political tensions
