Pakistani man accused of plotting shooting at New York Jewish Center

A Pakistani man was arrested in Canada this week and charged with plotting a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

Kabul 24: Federal authorities announced the arrest of Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, on September 4, stating he aimed to kill as many Jewish individuals as possible in the name of ISIS.

Details of the Plot

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed that Khan, 20, attempted to travel from Canada to New York City with plans to commit a mass shooting. He has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

The Justice Department noted that Khan had begun sharing ISIS propaganda and expressing support for the group since November 2023. He discussed creating an “offline cell” of ISIS supporters to execute attacks against Jewish centers in the U.S., specifically targeting locations in Brooklyn.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Khan was apprehended near the U.S.-Canada border, about 12 miles away, after using multiple vehicles to approach the border. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 13 in Montreal, where details about his extradition to the U.S. remain unclear. Canadian authorities condemned the planned attack, emphasizing that such ideologically driven violence has no place in Canada.
