Persecution and torture of Afghan immigrants by Turkish police

Politico, Spiegel and several other media have reported on the beating and mistreatment of Afghan immigrants by the Turkish police and have announced that Afghan and Syrian refugees have been beaten and abused in the deportation centers of Turkey.

Kabul 24: The findings of Politico, Spiegel and several other media outlets show that Afghan and Syrian refugees have been beaten and abused in Turkish deportation centers.

Based on the findings of these media, these centers were built with the financial assistance of the European Union, but the European authorities have ignored the status of these centers.

The findings of the mentioned media show that Turkey has deported hundreds of thousands of Afghan and Syrian refugees using facilities and equipment helped by the European Union.

According to this media, at least 213 million of the EU budget has been used for the construction and renovation of 30 refugee deportation centers in Türkiye. Deported asylum seekers in these centers face overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, abuse and torture.

Afghan and Syrian refugees are often violently forced to sign documents for “voluntary” return.

These asylum seekers reported being beaten and kept in cold rooms in deportation centers for up to 12 hours. They said that Turkish agents have ignored their basic rights.

Research by these media shows that these asylum seekers hardly find a way to contact their lawyer or family members.

Despite widespread evidence of abuses of asylum seekers’ rights in Turkey’s deportation centers, senior EU officials have repeatedly ignored the issue.
