Russia: Islamic State is seeking to destabilise Afghanistan and the region

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, has said that the Islamic State (IS) is destabilising Afghanistan and the region with “external support”.

Kabul24: Speaking at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Thursday, Zakharova said that the security situation in Afghanistan is “tense”

“ISIL is engaged in subversive activities against the country’s current authorities, and simultaneously seeks to undermine stability in the Central Asian countries neighboring Afghanistan.

The terrorist group is clearly encouraged by external forces as its members themselves have confirmed receiving funds from foreign intelligence agencies; and there are foreign terrorists among its fighters,” she said.

Earlier this month, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, accused the US of providing “strong” support to terrorist outfits in Afghanistan. Lavrov said that the goal is not to allow Afghanistan to calm down and it is in the interest of the US to have some destabilizing processes constantly taking place there.

Despite the Taliban’s promises to suppress ISKP, the group has continued to carry out deadly and large-scale attacks in Afghanistan. In recent incidents in Badakhshan province, ISKP claimed responsibility for two major suicide attacks that killed several high-ranking Taliban members, including the deputy governor, and injured dozens
