Nada Al-Nashif, the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, has expressed deep concerns over the Taliban abuse women’s rights.
Kabul24: She said: “Globally, we have seen a backlash against women’s and girls’ rights in recent years. However, nowhere has this been more profound and all-encompassing than in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power in mid-August 2021.”
“Despite repeatedly asserting that women’s rights will be protected within the framework of Shari’a, over the past 22 months, every aspect of women’s and girls’ lives has been restricted,” she added.
Heightened concerns regarding human rights, especially women’s rights, have increased in Afghanistan.
In his latest report, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, revealed that the Taliban has issued 50 edicts in the past 22 months that curtail or eliminate the rights and freedoms of women in Afghanistan.
Both the United States and the United Nations have emphasised that the Taliban will be recognised unless women and girls’ rights are returned to them.
