The Philippines says China’s sea moves are “aggressive, unprofessional and illegal”.

The Philippine government has condemned China’s recent actions in the South China Sea, labeling them as “repeated aggressive, unprofessional and illegal” maneuvers. This statement follows a series of incidents involving confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels.
Unsafe Maneuvers and Aggressive Tactics

The Philippines’ national maritime council reported that Chinese aircraft engaged in unsafe maneuvers against a civilian aircraft conducting patrols near Scarborough Shoal and Subi Reef. Additionally, on Sunday, Chinese vessels reportedly “blocked, rammed, and fired water cannons” at a Philippine fisheries vessel during a resupply mission in Sabina Shoal, actions deemed “alarming” by the council.

Call for Constructive Dialogue

The Philippine government emphasized its commitment to diplomacy, urging China to engage in constructive dialogue regarding maritime issues. Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro reiterated that China’s actions are “patently illegal,” highlighting the need for readiness against such aggressive behavior.

Mutual Defense Considerations

In light of these tensions, Teodoro addressed whether these incidents could invoke treaty obligations with the United States, emphasizing the importance of deterrence against armed attacks rather than preemptive speculation. The U.S. has pledged support under their mutual defense treaty with the Philippines.

China’s Claims and International Response

China asserts sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, conflicting with claims from several Southeast Asian nations. An international tribunal ruled in 2016 that China’s claims lack legal basis, a decision Beijing has consistently rejected. The situation continues to escalate, raising concerns over regional stability.
