The UN refugee chief tells countries to scrap ineffective border controls

The head of the UN refugee agency, Filippo Grandi, called on nations to abandon ineffective border controls aimed at blocking refugees and migrants.

Kabul 24: Speaking at the UNHCR’s annual meeting in Geneva, he highlighted that 123 million people are currently displaced worldwide.

Grandi emphasized the need for countries to address the root causes of displacement rather than merely tightening borders. He stated, “Do not focus only on your borders,” advocating for a more comprehensive approach to refugee protection.

Global Responsibility

The UNHCR chief’s remarks come amid increasing global challenges related to migration, urging nations to share responsibility equitably rather than shifting burdens elsewhere.
