US Mobilizes Emergency Relief for Afghan Flood Victims

Karen Decker, the acting head of the US Embassy to Afghanistan, has expressed her sympathy and solidarity with the families affected by the floods in Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman, and Panjshir provinces. In a post on X Wednesday, Decker, who is based in Qatar, said:

Kabul 24: “My heart goes out to families affected by flash floods in Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman, and Panjshir. We are monitoring the situation and mobilizing emergency relief, including food, water, and other essential supplies, to support those in need.”

Heavy Rains and Floods Leave Trail of Destruction

Over the past few days, heavy rains, floods, and storms have left dozens dead and injured in several provinces in Afghanistan. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, and huge financial losses have been incurred, especially to residents in Jalalabad city and its districts.

IRC Prepares to Scale Up Emergency Response

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has deployed a mobile health team to the worst affected areas of Surkhrod district in Nangarhar and is preparing to deploy two emergency response teams to deliver emergency health services to those who have been injured or are cut off from accessing mainstream services as a result of the storms. The IRC is also conducting assessments and providing emergency health services to those in need.

UNICEF and Other Aid Agencies Respond

UNICEF and other aid agencies are sending relief teams and desperately needed humanitarian aid to northeastern Afghanistan where unusually heavy spring rains and floods have killed hundreds and destroyed thousands of homes and livestock.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has dispatched 450 family kits, 500 hygiene kits, 476 blankets for adults and babies, and 100 clothing kits, along with support provided by other UN agencies and partners.

IFRC and Afghan Red Crescent Society Respond

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is scaling up an emergency response to deal with the latest series of deadly floods in Afghanistan.

The IFRC has allocated 750,000 Swiss francs from its Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) for the initial response. The Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) is providing cooked meals, temporary shelter, emergency health services, and other forms of assistance to those displaced.

UN Teams Dispatch Aid

UN humanitarian teams scrambled to get lifesaving aid to communities devastated by deadly flash floods in northeastern Afghanistan over the weekend. The UN has dispatched aid packages that include temporary shelters, essential non-food items, solar modules, clothing, and tools for repairs to damaged shelters. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is distributing energy biscuits to survivors of the floods.

Global Community Urged to Provide Aid

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued an urgent call to its member states and the global community to dispatch life-saving assistance promptly to the flood-stricken areas. The call emphasizes the need for immediate and sustained support to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
