Migration and Trade Diplomacy: Key Focus of High-Level Talks Between Islamic Emirate and Ankara in Kabul

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, called for an immediate resolution to the challenging condition of Afghan migrants in Turkey during an official meeting with Sadin Yildiz, the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Kabul. The meeting comes as Ankara has intensified enforcement policies against undocumented migrants in recent months.

According to an official statement released by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, both sides evaluated various dimensions of bilateral cooperation, including the expansion of economic ties, commercial exchanges, and transit corridors.

However, addressing the administrative and legal hurdles faced by Afghan refugees in Turkey remained a central topic of discussion. Mullah Baradar emphasized that resolving the residency and humanitarian difficulties of Afghan migrants could serve as a catalyst for further strengthening relations between the two nations.

This diplomatic dialogue takes place against the backdrop of official figures indicating a surge in detentions and forced deportations of Afghan citizens from Turkey. Monitoring agencies report that Turkish law enforcement and security forces have detained over 25,000 undocumented Afghan refugees across various provinces in the first eight months of the current calendar year alone—a development that has sparked widespread concern among human rights organizations and displaced families.

Regional analysts observe that officials of the Islamic Emirate are leveraging diplomatic channels and highlighting Afghanistan’s strategic transit and trade potential to mitigate the impact of mass detentions and deportations. Serving as a primary gateway to Europe, Turkey has remained a key transit hub and destination for thousands of Afghan citizens fleeing economic and political uncertainty in recent years.

These consultations continue as commercial actors and traders from both Afghanistan and Turkey call for streamlined travel and commercial visa procedures, aiming to sustain bilateral trade growth between Kabul and Ankara independently of migration challenges.
