The TAPI pipeline project is considered one of the major projects in the region, which allows the countries of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to transfer natural gas through it.
With the construction of this pipe, Turkmenistan’s gas will be exported to Pakistan and India through Afghanistan, and for this reason its name consists of the first letters of the names of these four countries in English (TAPI: Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India).
The contract for the implementation of this eight billion dollar project was signed by the heads of these four countries in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, on December 11, 2010.
This pipeline has the capacity to transport more than 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually and will be profitable for all four partners of this project, especially for Turkmenistan, which has been looking for a customer and a way to export gas for the past two decades.
