Ministry of Education: Over 1,100 Schools Built, Thousands Reconstructed in Four Years

The Ministry of Education has announced that over the past four years, more than 1,100 schools and educational institutions across Afghanistan have been provided with standard buildings, while approximately 3,000 schools damaged by natural disasters or disruptive actions have been reconstructed.

Kabul 24: Mansoor Ahmad Hamza, the ministry’s spokesperson, stated that these projects were funded through the ministry’s budget, with support from donor organizations, national businesspeople, and philanthropists.

Hamza added, “The construction and reconstruction of schools have been carried out with the cooperation of partner organizations, local businesses, and education supporters, marking a significant step toward improving educational infrastructure.” However, educational challenges persist in some areas. Students in Paktia and Khost provinces have raised concerns about the lack of facilities, including textbooks, proper school buildings, and teaching equipment.

Ruhullah, a student from Paktia, told TOLOnews, “Without textbooks, we can only understand half of the lessons.” Younus, a student from Khost, highlighted the absence of school buildings, stating, “In hot weather, learning is difficult. Schools need proper buildings and organized management.”

A recent UNICEF report noted that around four million Afghan children are deprived of education due to inadequate infrastructure, lack of clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and qualified teachers, particularly female educators.

Mohammad Aslam, a university professor, emphasized that a standard school should have laboratories, libraries, and teaching materials to ensure quality education.

Additionally, the Ministry’s Literacy Directorate reported that over the past year, 6,819 literacy classes were established nationwide, with more than 122,000 graduates and approximately 145,000 beneficiaries.

These efforts reflect the Ministry of Education’s commitment to expanding access to education. However, further investment is needed to address shortages and enhance educational quality in underserved areas.
