Zabihullah Mujahid: UN Security Council Has Lost Its Effectiveness and Credibility

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, has sharply criticized the United Nations Security Council, stating that the body no longer holds the influence or effectiveness it once had and that no meaningful expectations should be placed on its meetings.

Kabul 24: He emphasized that the Council continues to hold sessions focused on repetitive and fruitless issues that have failed to produce results in the past and are unlikely to do so in the future. According to Mujahid, one of the main reasons for this lack of progress is the politicization of human rights issues.

He stated: “As long as human rights are used as a political tool, these discussions will remain unproductive and without tangible outcomes.”The spokesperson also highlighted the ongoing tense situation between Afghanistan and Pakistan, asserting that Afghanistan is currently facing aggression from Pakistan, in which civilians are being targeted. At the same time, Afghan migrants in Pakistan are enduring severe hardships and widespread challenges.

Despite these urgent matters, Mujahid argued, the Security Council persists in focusing on outdated and ineffective topics instead of addressing real-time regional crises.Mujahid further criticized the United Nations for refusing to hand over Afghanistan’s seat to the Islamic Emirate, describing this as the denial of Afghanistan’s legitimate right to representation.

He stressed that Afghanistan’s active participation in such meetings is essential, yet the UN continues to block the country’s rightful presence on the international stage.Meanwhile, political analyst Sayed Muqaddam Amin suggested that the Islamic Emirate should submit all available evidence and documentation regarding border violations and related issues through official diplomatic channels to the Security Council.

He noted that presenting concrete documents and proof would allow for a serious and evidence-based examination of the matters at hand. These strong remarks come at a time when the UN Security Council is scheduled to hold two important meetings on Afghanistan in the current month.

The first session, set for March 9, will address recent border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, while the second, scheduled for March 17, will focus on the mandate and activities of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Mujahid’s statements reflect deep frustration within the Islamic Emirate toward the current approach of the United Nations—particularly the Security Council—which Kabul believes is increasingly driven by the political interests of Western powers rather than genuine efforts to resolve Afghanistan’s challenges and promote regional stability.
