Amnesty International has reiterated that erasing women and girls from public life is a crime against humanity for which the Taliban must be held accountable.
Kabul24: In a tweet on Saturday, the organization highlighted that Afghanistan’s women and girls have been stripped of their basic rights and freedoms, with their exclusion from public and political spheres.
“They are silenced, their aspirations shattered, and their access to education and professional growth forcibly taken away.
Constrained in their movements and choices, they are confined to the shadows,” Amnesty International wrote, noting that any act of defiance is met with brutality and violence.
The organization further stated that arbitrary detentions, torture, and the blatant disregard for their fundamental human rights have become “the order of the day.”
“The actions of the Taliban may amount to crimes against humanity. The international community must rise to the occasion and take action,” Amnesty International asserted. “Justice and accountability must prevail.
Afghan women and girls deserve better. They deserve justice. They deserve equality. They should not be persecuted based on their gender” the organization emphasized.
In a joint report released in May, Amnesty International and the International Commission of Jurists emphasized that the Taliban’s treatment of women and girls should be investigated as a possible crime against humanity.
