Turkmenistan to Begin Development of Torghundi Port in Herat

The press office of the Herat governor announced in a statement that Turkmenistan will initiate the development and reconstruction of Torghundi Port, one of the most significant commercial gateways in western Afghanistan.

Kabul 24: This project, aimed at enhancing the region’s trade and transit infrastructure, marks a crucial step in strengthening economic ties between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

According to the statement, Qurbanov Sardar, the CEO of Turkmenistan’s Railway Agency Joint-Stock Companies, met and held discussions with Islamjar, the Taliban-appointed governor of Herat, during an official visit.

Both parties emphasized the importance of developing Torghundi Port as a key hub for facilitating trade and enhancing economic connectivity between the two nations.

Located near the Turkmenistan border, Torghundi Port has long played a vital role in regional commerce, and its development is expected to significantly boost Herat’s transit and economic capacities.

The statement further elaborated that the project will include upgrading the port’s infrastructure, expanding railway lines, and establishing modern facilities to streamline export and import processes.

The initiative is anticipated to increase trade volumes between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, create new job opportunities for local residents, and contribute to the economic growth of Herat.

During the meeting, the Herat governor welcomed Turkmenistan’s commitment to investing in the project, describing it as a testament to the growing friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Qurbanov Sardar, in turn, reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to support infrastructure projects in Afghanistan, noting that the development of Torghundi Port could solidify Herat’s position as a regional trade hub.

This project comes at a time when Herat, due to its strategic location, remains a critical center for trade and transit in western Afghanistan.

The development of Torghundi Port has the potential to transform Herat into a major regional trade hub, facilitating connectivity between Central Asian and South Asian markets.
