The German government has taken an extraordinary diplomatic step by directly accusing Russia of involvement in the drone attacks at Leipzig Airport.
Kabul 24: German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt explicitly stated that these incidents precisely match the pattern of Moscow’s known hybrid and sabotage operations across the European continent.
Warning of ongoing threats to Germany’s national security, he stressed that Berlin must prepare itself to be targeted once again by operatives linked to the Kremlin.
This intense friction escalated after an explosive drone was discovered on August 4 in close proximity to a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig Airport in eastern Germany. According to security reports, a malfunction in the drone’s detonation mechanism prevented a catastrophic explosion at this crucial logistics hub.
Investigators believe the operation was far more extensive, as a second drone is suspected to have struck another cargo aircraft nearby. Furthermore, ten days after the initial incident, an official report emerged regarding the discovery of a third drone in the same area, exposing a coordinated plot by Moscow’s operatives to target Ukrainian transport fleets.
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly rejected the accusations, accusing Berlin of “staging and fabricating evidence.” Putin claimed that by pinning the blame on Moscow, the German government aims to deflect public attention and rally greater political support for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Nevertheless, Berlin officials dismissed the Kremlin’s claims as baseless and enforced retaliatory diplomatic measures. In a decisive response to this sabotage operation, the German government ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in the city of Bonn alongside a cultural center in Berlin a move signaling that bilateral relations have entered a new phase of severe confrontation and friction.
