Drone Attack Targets KRG Prime Minister’s Office and Intelligence Chief’s Residence; Masrour Barzani Calls it a “Dangerous Escalation”

Official authorities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq announced that two Iranian explosive drones targeted sensitive and key government positions early Monday morning (August 17), including the personal office of the Prime Minister and the residence of the region’s Intelligence Chief.

Kabul 24: Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), confirmed the aerial strike in an official post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, writing: “Following investigations by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate, my personal office and the residence of the Head of the Security and Intelligence Agency (Parastin) were targeted today by Iranian drone attacks.”

The KRG Prime Minister condemned the attack as a breach of security red lines, stating: “This is a dangerous, unprecedented, and escalatory development in the region, posing a direct and overt threat to the stability, security, and sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region.”

According to initial reports from Erbil security agencies, the drones specifically targeted top-tier governance and security structures within the region.

The attack comes amid heightened security sensitivities along Iraq’s northern borders, sparking a fresh wave of concern over the fragile political and security stability in northern Iraq.

Further details regarding potential casualties, financial damage, or an official response from Iraq’s central government in Baghdad have not yet been released. However, the incident is expected to carry significant diplomatic and security implications for relations between Erbil, Baghdad, and Tehran.
