Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, welcomed the one-year extension of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) after the Security Council unanimously adopted a draft resolution proposed by China.
Kabul 24: Speaking after Monday’s Security Council meeting, Fu Cong expressed gratitude for the strong support and positive votes from all 15 Council members.
He described the resolution as a clear demonstration of the international community’s firm backing for UNAMA’s activities and other UN agencies working in Afghanistan.
The text underscores the importance of continuing these missions to support stability, reconstruction, and development in the country.
A key element of the resolution calls on UNAMA to facilitate access to the frozen assets of Afghanistan’s central bank for the benefit of the Afghan people.
Fu Cong urged relevant countries to release these assets as soon as possible, lift “unilateral and illegal sanctions” against Afghanistan, and create favorable conditions for the country’s economic recovery and long-term development.
A significant portion of the resolution is devoted to the human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly the rights of women and girls.
Fu Cong expressed hope that the Afghan authorities would heed the legitimate demands of the Afghan people and the international community by taking more effective measures to protect human rights, especially women’s rights.
He added that Afghanistan should present a more open, inclusive, and responsible image to the world.According to the Chinese envoy, the resolution reflects the global community’s expectation for Afghanistan’s reintegration into the international system.
He emphasized that UNAMA should continue to serve as a “bridge” to promote dialogue and constructive engagement between the Afghan government and the international community.
The draft resolution, sponsored by China, was adopted with 15 votes in favor, indicating broad consensus within the Security Council on extending UNAMA’s mandate.
This renewal comes at a critical time as Afghanistan faces severe economic hardship, social restrictions, and international isolation. Observers expect UNAMA to play a more proactive role in the coming year by focusing on inclusive dialogue, humanitarian assistance, and practical confidence-building measures.
The success of this extended mission will largely depend on the level of cooperation from the Afghan authorities and the willingness of influential countries to ease sanctions and provide tangible support to the Afghan population.
