Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, warned in his latest remarks that Washington’s failure to diplomatically engage with the caretaker government of the Islamic Emirate could create a critical influence vacuum, paving the way for China and Russia to further strengthen their strategic foothold in Afghanistan.
Kabul 24: Highlighting the geopolitical ties and regional interests of competing powers, the veteran diplomat emphasized that Washington’s current diplomatic policies require a fundamental reassessment. According to Khalilzad, the United States must adjust, update, and balance its political approach based on the ground realities of present-day Afghanistan to avoid further isolation and exclusion from complex regional dynamics.
Khalilzad further stressed that instability, chaos, and a renewed collapse of Afghanistan are by no means in the national interest of the US, noting that Washington firmly wishes to prevent the country from slipping back into turmoil and widespread crisis. He maintained that preserving stability in Afghanistan necessitates a pragmatic posture and maintaining active communication channels with the authorities in Kabul.
These comments come as regional powers, particularly Beijing and Moscow, have expanded their economic, political, and security engagement in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US forces. China’s focus on mining and infrastructure investments, combined with Russia’s active diplomatic and security outreach, has increasingly filled the absence of American influence.
