Vikram Jeet Singh Sahney, a member of the Indian Parliament, announced that Afghanistan and India have agreed to establish direct flights between Kabul and Amritsar.
Kabul 24: This development is seen as a significant milestone in strengthening the economic and cultural ties between the two nations.Sahney described the agreement as a “major breakthrough,” stating, “Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister, and the Indian government have finalized plans to launch direct flights between Kabul and Amritsar.”
This initiative is expected to facilitate smoother trade and connectivity for Afghan traders and businesses.
Highlighting the challenges of the land route, Sahney noted that Pakistan frequently closes the Attari–Wagah border crossing, which has long hindered Afghan traders’ access to Indian markets.
These closures have disrupted the supply chain, preventing Afghan goods, such as dry fruits, saffron, and handicrafts, from reaching India, a key export destination for Afghanistan.
The new air corridor between Kabul and Amritsar will enable Afghan goods to be transported directly to Indian markets, bypassing the logistical barriers of the land route.
This development is expected to reduce transportation time and costs, making trade more efficient and cost-effective. Sahney emphasized that the air route will not only boost Afghanistan’s economy but also deepen the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.
The agreement comes at a time when Afghanistan is seeking to expand its trade relations with regional partners.
The Kabul–Amritsar air link is anticipated to create new opportunities for economic and cultural collaboration, fostering greater connectivity between Kabul and New Delhi. By streamlining trade processes, this initiative will support Afghanistan’s export potential and contribute to sustainable regional development.
This direct flight route marks a pivotal step toward enhancing bilateral cooperation, offering Afghan traders reliable access to one of their largest markets and paving the way for stronger economic ties between Afghanistan and India.
