Muttaqi and Khalilzad Hold Talks on Expanding Kabul–Washington Relations

Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, to discuss the current situation in the country and explore avenues for expanding relations and engagement between Kabul and Washington.

Kabul 24: According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides evaluated existing opportunities across various sectors and key issues related to Afghan-American relations that could serve to strengthen and broaden bilateral engagement.

During the meeting, Amir Khan Muttaqi outlined recent progress, highlighting positive developments in overall security, political stability, economic growth, and the drive toward self-reliance. He emphasized that Afghanistan currently offers a secure and conducive environment for attracting both domestic and foreign investment, with necessary foundations laid for economic cooperation.

In turn, Zalmay Khalilzad offered a positive assessment of the current security and stability, commending the achievements made in reconstruction and self-reliance efforts. The former U.S. envoy expressed hope that Afghanistan would continue to accelerate its progress along the path of development, economic expansion, and national self-sufficiency.

Khalilzad also shared his perspectives and recommendations regarding the establishment of constructive engagement and the development of diplomatic ties between Afghanistan and the United States, underscoring the importance of maintaining open channels of dialogue.

This meeting takes place against the backdrop of the caretaker government’s consistent emphasis on shaping its international relations around mutual respect and national interests, while urging Western powers, particularly the United States, to adapt their approach to the current realities in Afghanistan.
