The eastern flank of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has once again witnessed a concerning security incident.
Kabul 24: Official reports released by Romanian military authorities indicate that early Sunday morning, an unidentified drone was detected, intercepted, and swiftly destroyed by NATO patrol aircraft after violating the country’s airspace in the southeastern region.
According to a statement issued by the Romanian Ministry of Defense, national radar and defense systems first logged the suspicious and unauthorized flight in the skies near the city of Galați.
Immediately following a hazard assessment and authorization from the joint command center, two F-18 fighter jets belonging to the Spanish Air Force—stationed in the region on high alert as part of NATO’s air policing and surveillance mission—scrambled to execute the interception.
During the successful operation, the intruding drone was struck and brought down over an uninhabited area between the towns of Băleni and Codalb, close to the border between Romania and Moldova.
Although technical investigations are underway to determine the drone’s identity, origin, and intended objective, Romanian security officials have not yet released details regarding the country or group behind the launch.
In an official statement, the Romanian Defense Minister praised the precise execution of the Spanish pilots and the vigilance of the Romanian forces at the operational command center, calling the incident a crucial test for the nation’s air defense.
He emphasized that this decisive action demonstrated not only Romania’s ability to protect its own airspace using domestic capabilities, but also the immediate, integrated, and effective support it receives from its NATO allies.
Such occurrences near conflict zones underscore the heightened sensitivity surrounding air security along NATO’s eastern perimeter and reaffirm the vital role of the alliance’s quick-reaction forces in the Black Sea region.
