Shift in Pakistan’s Foreign Policy: Opposition Demands End to Hostile Stance Toward Afghanistan

Amid escalating diplomatic tensions and growing border and security disagreements between Kabul and Islamabad, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, leader of the Pakistani opposition movement, has called for a fundamental review of his country’s current policy regarding Afghanistan.

Kabul 24: Speaking at a major joint meeting of opposition parties hosted by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan, Achakzai urged the Pakistani government to abandon its confrontational approach toward its northern neighbor.

He emphasized that if Islamabad alleges hostile behavior or national security threats originating from Afghan territory, it must present clear, verifiable evidence to both the public and political leaders.

Questioning the underlying motives behind the ongoing dispute, the opposition leader stated that if the government provides convincing proof, opposition parties would support the official stance. However, he argued that military pressure and public accusations remain indefensible as long as allegations lack tangible documentation.

These remarks come as relations between the two nations have dropped to their lowest point in recent years, driven by mutual accusations concerning the presence of armed groups—such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)—and Islamabad’s strict measures regarding the forced deportation of Afghan refugees.

Political analysts and regional experts similarly argue that continued military confrontation will not resolve Pakistan’s security challenges; rather, it threatens to widen the rift and worsen broader regional instability.

Analysts note that unproven allegations serve primarily domestic political functions and that a significant portion of Pakistan’s political establishment favors ending the deadlock.

According to experts, the only path toward long-term stability and security along the shared border is replacing threats with constructive diplomatic dialogue and sustainable cross-border cooperation.
