Seventy years ago, Poland witnessed a historic confrontation with Soviet-imposed dictatorship. In the summer of 1956, Polish workers took to the streets to protest political and economic oppression, encountering brutal state repression.
Kabul 24: Today, humanoid robots—not humans—have gathered in central Warsaw. Behind them stand workers once more, protesting not against political tyranny, but against the automated dominance of the digital era.
The contrast across these seven decades is striking.
In 1956, human demonstrators focused on political freedom, national sovereignty, workers’ rights, and resisting a foreign military power. Today, roughly thirty humanoid and quadruped robots stand outside the Ministry of Digital Affairs, holding signs, chanting slogans, and demanding technology regulations to protect human employment.
While humans speak through these machines about the future of humanity, this surreal scene carries deeper significance beyond mere public display.
For much of the twentieth century, Western society rested on an industrial social contract structured around the tension between labor and capital. Welfare states, trade unions, social democratic parties, and market mechanisms evolved to manage this divide.
The digital economy is fundamentally altering this relationship. The central issue is no longer limited to factory ownership or wage distribution. Instead, as machines and algorithms assume core human tasks, fundamental questions arise regarding the future of employment, the middle class, social dignity, and the definition of labor itself.
Consequently, the traditional labor-capital binary is proving insufficient. A new tension is emerging: the speed of technological advancement versus the social and political capacity of societies to adapt.
There is a historical irony at play: where humans once faced tanks to defend their rights, robots now “protest” for tech regulation in a city deeply shaped by its history of resistance against occupation and authoritarianism. Humans are effectively using robotic proxies to voice fears about their own future.
The transition from an industrial to a digital economy extends beyond domestic politics. Global competition over artificial intelligence, robotics, data, and digital infrastructure is becoming a primary determinant of geopolitical power.
This shift highlights differences between political and social models. China, operating under a different social contract than Western liberal democracies, advances rapidly in key technological sectors. As technology underpins economic and geopolitical strength, the divide grows between systems capable of rapid resource mobilization and those balancing innovation, individual rights, market forces, and social considerations.
The evolution from 1956 to present-day Warsaw reflects a broader epochal shift: moving from an industrial society centered on human relationships with capital and the state, to a digital economy where human interaction with technology, algorithms, and machinery becomes a core political challenge.
Seventy years ago, the primary goal was defending human freedom against political autocracy and military force—a struggle that continues in parts of the world. Elsewhere, the emerging challenge is preserving freedom, labor, dignity, and the social contract in the face of human-created technology.
Does the rise of AI and China’s technological progress point toward a more multicentric global order? Just as Western leadership in the industrial economy drove the era of European expansion, the shift toward a digital economy raises questions about the future trajectory of China’s governance model.
A central premise of liberalism is safeguarding human dignity against tech-enabled vertical authoritarianism. Should human agency be overwhelmed by horizontal technological networks, the nature of a new social contract remains to be defined.
