In a remarkable achievement, Afghanistan’s national zurkhaneh wrestling team secured 11 bronze medals at the 7th Asian Zurkhaneh and Wrestling Championships held in Urmia, Iran, from October 7-9, 2025, earning the third-place team trophy.
Kabul 24: The event showcased intense competition among nearly 20 Asian countries, with Afghanistan’s athletes standing tall against formidable opponents.
Comprising over 10 dedicated athletes, the Afghan team competed in various disciplines, including mil-bazi, kabbadeh, and individual skills, clinching 11 bronze medals and securing third place overall.
Shakib Attai, a key team member, told Tolo News, “We earned third places in individual events as well, and these medals reflect the immense potential of Afghan youth.” The team’s success was attributed to rigorous training and the support of the Afghanistan Zurkhaneh Federation.
Iran, the host nation, claimed the championship title with multiple gold medals in disciplines like mil-bazi and heavy mil, while Iraq took second place with several silver and bronze medals.
Afghanistan shared the third spot with Tajikistan in some events, marking a historic moment for the country’s traditional sports scene.
The federation hailed this achievement as a turning point, emphasizing plans to bolster infrastructure and prepare for global competitions. “This third-place finish propels us toward bigger goals,” a federation official stated.
The event, attended by over 180 athletes, blended ancient zurkhaneh traditions with modern standards, fostering cultural exchange across Asia.For Afghanistan, these medals symbolize resilience and unity.
The team, drawn from cities like Kabul, Herat, and Mazar-i-Sharif, inspired a new generation of enthusiasts.
With this success, experts predict a surge in zurkhaneh sports participation, strengthening its role as a unifying force in the country.
