Following the assassination of prominent Pakistani religious scholar Maulana Muhammad Idris in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Tuesday, widespread protests and business closures swept across many cities and regions of Pakistan on Wednesday.

Kabul 24: Maulana Muhammad Idris was killed in a targeted attack in Charsadda. The terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the killing shortly after the incident through its media channels.

The assassination has triggered strong reactions from religious leaders, political parties, and ordinary citizens. On Wednesday, markets, shops, and commercial centers remained shut in many parts of the country as a mark of protest.

Demonstrations were reported in several areas, with major protests occurring in Charsadda (the site of the attack), Tank, and Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province.

In Charsadda, protesters gathered at Farooq-e-Azam Square and Tangi Road, blocking all major transportation routes in the area. Local reports describe a tense and volatile atmosphere, with security forces placed on high alert.

Maulana Muhammad Idris was a well-known Sunni scholar who had taken clear stances against extremism and terrorism in recent years.

His active presence in religious gatherings and social activities had made him a highly influential figure in northwest Pakistan. His killing has caused widespread grief and anger within religious circles.

In response to the incident, Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) both strongly condemned the attack and expressed sorrow over the scholar’s death.

These condemnations highlight the deep divisions among militant groups in the region.Security analysts believe that targeting prominent religious scholars who oppose ISIS ideology is part of the group’s strategy to spread fear and undermine religious unity in Pakistan.

Similar attacks on clerics and scholars have been reported in various parts of the country in the past.Protesters chanted slogans against terrorism and ISIS, demanding the swift identification and severe punishment of those responsible.

Leaders of several religious parties have called on the government to take the security of scholars and religious sites more seriously. As of now, Pakistani government and security officials have not issued a detailed official statement, but local sources report increased security patrols and emergency meetings.

This tragic incident has once again raised serious concerns about security and stability in Pakistan and has heightened fears regarding the expanding activities of ISIS in tribal and border regions.

Citizens hope that security agencies will act decisively to prevent the recurrence of such heinous crimes.
