Hanafi Asserts Islamic Emirate’s Right to Afghanistan’s UN Seat

Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Administrative Deputy Prime Minister, stated that with the establishment of nationwide security and the successful crackdown on narcotics, securing Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations is an undeniable right of the Islamic Emirate.

Kabul 24: Speaking on the country’s current political and security landscape, Hanafi emphasized that national sovereignty is fully restored across Afghanistan, and its territory will not be used to threaten the security of any other nation.

Hanafi stated: “Sovereignty is established in Afghanistan, security is ensured, and drug cultivation and smuggling have ended. Afghan soil is not used against the security of others.

Therefore, having representation at the United Nations is the legitimate right of the Afghan nation, and it must be granted to us.”

In this context, Maiwand Jorat, a political analyst, attributed the delay in handing over the seat to external pressures, saying: “Certain influential countries, led by the United States, hold significant sway within UN structures and have so far prevented the Islamic Emirate’s representative from taking this seat.”

The Deputy Prime Minister also rejected reports regarding a complete ban on women working in Afghanistan, highlighting their presence in essential sectors: “There is propaganda abroad claiming that women do not work here; however, thousands of our sisters are working as doctors and nurses in hospitals, thousands are teaching in the education sector, and many others are employed in departments such as passport offices, national ID centers, and the police force while observing the Islamic hijab.”

Conversely, Tafsir Siyahposh, a women’s rights activist, expressed concern over the uncertain status of women, stating: “Half of society cannot be ignored under any circumstances. For over four years, our professional and social future has remained in limbo. Our serious demand from the Islamic Emirate is to give due attention to the situation of women.”

Meanwhile, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, previously noted that decisions regarding the recognition of governments and the assignment of UN seats fall under the authority of member states, not the UN Secretariat.

He added that no country has officially recognized the Islamic Emirate for Afghanistan’s UN seat to date, and no formal process is currently underway among member states regarding this matter.
