Alireza Bikdeli, Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Kabul, announced in an interview with an Iranian media outlet that Tehran plans to boost imports from Afghanistan.
Kabul 24: This initiative aims to replace some goods previously sourced from other countries with Afghan products.
Bikdeli stated that the initial focus will be on importing meat, cotton, and certain agricultural products. This move not only strengthens economic ties between the two neighboring countries but also reduces Iran’s reliance on distant markets while supporting regional production.
Afghanistan, with its rich natural resources and significant agricultural capacity, holds great potential to meet Iran’s market demands. Afghan meat, particularly lamb, is known for its high quality and competitive pricing, making it a viable alternative to imports from other regions.
Additionally, cotton grown in various parts of Afghanistan can fulfill the needs of Iran’s textile industry. Agricultural products such as dried fruits, saffron, and certain grains are also among the items Iran plans to procure from Afghanistan.
This decision comes as part of efforts to expand bilateral economic and trade cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan. Geographic proximity, shared cultural and historical ties, and mutual economic needs provide a strong foundation for enhanced trade.
Bikdeli emphasized that this initiative benefits Iran’s economy while also supporting Afghanistan’s economic development, especially amid the country’s ongoing challenges.Experts believe this policy could lower transportation costs and expedite the supply of goods.
Furthermore, strengthening trade relations with Afghanistan may contribute to regional economic stability. With the implementation of this plan, trade volumes between the two countries are expected to grow, diversifying Iran’s import portfolio.
This initiative could serve as a model for future regional cooperation.
