kazakhstan-bans-face-coverings-in-public

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a law banning face coverings in public places.
Kabul 24: Aimed at enhancing public security, the law prohibits wearing any clothing that obscures facial identification. However, exceptions have been outlined, including medical masks, protective gear used in occupations like welding, clothing for extreme weather conditions, and masks required for sports or cultural events.
While the law does not explicitly mention religious coverings such as the burqa or niqab, many interpret it as effectively banning these garments, which fully or largely cover the face.Unlike the burqa, which covers the entire face, or the niqab, which leaves only the eyes visible, the hijab, which covers only the hair, remains permissible.
In recent years, the use of religious coverings in Kazakhstan has increased, though the hijab is far more common than the burqa or niqab. Some officials and critics argue that the burqa and niqab, considered non-traditional in Kazakh culture, are imports from Arab countries.
This perspective aligns with President Tokayev’s earlier statements advocating for the promotion of traditional Kazakh clothing, which he believes better reflects the nation’s ethnic identity and should be widely adopted.Reactions to the law on social media have been mixed.
Some view it as a necessary measure to ensure security and preserve national identity, while others see it as an attempt by the government to exert greater control over personal choices. Kazakhstan is not alone in imposing such restrictions; neighboring countries like Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan have introduced similar regulations on face coverings in recent years.
These measures reflect a regional approach to managing religious attire in the name of security and national identity. However, they continue to spark widespread debates about individual freedoms and cultural identity across these nations.
