Maria Corina Machado Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

On Friday, October 10, 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo announced that Maria Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

As the founder of the “Sumate Venezuela” movement, she has dedicated years to advocating for democratic governance and the rule of law in a country grappling with profound economic, political, and social crises.

Despite being barred from participating in the 2023 elections by the Venezuelan government due to her political activities, Machado has remained steadfast in her mission.

Through organizing peaceful protests and garnering international support, she has become a symbol of resistance against oppression.

In its statement, the Nobel Committee praised Machado’s courage and commitment: “Maria Corina Machado, through her bravery and dedication to democratic principles, has inspired millions in Venezuela and beyond.

Facing repression and personal threats, she has amplified the voice of Venezuela’s oppressed, demonstrating that the fight for justice and freedom is worth any sacrifice.”

The Nobel Peace Prize, which includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash award of approximately one million dollars, not only honors Machado’s contributions but also sends a powerful message to repressive regimes worldwide that the global community stands with human rights defenders.

In response to the announcement, Machado stated, “This prize belongs to all Venezuelans fighting for freedom and a better future.”The decision has sparked widespread reactions.

Supporters hailed it as a significant step in supporting Venezuela’s democratic struggle, while the Maduro government criticized it as “interference in internal affairs.”

The award has once again drawn global attention to Venezuela’s ongoing crisis and underscored Machado’s role as an inspiring leader in the fight for democracy.
