On the sidelines of the 8th Moscow Format consultations, Amir Khan Motaqi, Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, met with Mohammad Reza Bahrami, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the dialogue focused on deepening bilateral ties, reviewing recent regional developments, and exploring avenues to enhance mutual cooperation between Kabul and Tehran.
Kabul 24: During the meeting, Amir Khan Motaqi expressed appreciation for Iran’s constructive engagement with Afghanistan and its active participation in regional forums, emphasizing the essential need to further expand diplomatic and economic relations between the two neighbors. Highlighting the shared historical and cultural ties, he stressed the importance of addressing existing challenges and paving the way for long-term collaboration.
In response, Mohammad Reza Bahrami underscored the significance of stable bilateral relations and highlighted Afghanistan’s vital role in regional security and economy. He articulated Iran’s stance on supporting regional stability, boosting economic growth in Afghanistan, and facilitating trade and transit links, reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to ongoing constructive dialogue.
The bilateral talks at the Moscow Format highlight a mutual interest in addressing regional security and political stability through local dialogue rather than external intervention.
Emphasizing economic cooperation points to Afghanistan’s reliance on Iranian transit routes (such as the Chabahar Port) and Iran’s interest in maintaining a stable market and secure eastern border.
Regular high-level interactions reflect Iran’s pragmatic approach to managing shared issues—including border management, trade, and regional security—despite the broader status of official recognition.
