Following nearly 10 months of recurring border restrictions and severe economic losses for traders on both sides, Pakistani authorities have decided to fully reopen all transit routes and border crossings with Afghanistan.
Kabul 24: The decision marks a significant shift toward easing commercial tensions and restoring bilateral trade between the neighboring nations.
According to a report by *The Minute Mirror*, the decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi. The session was attended by key government officials, border security personnel, representatives from commercial trade bodies, and leading business leaders.
Attendees thoroughly evaluated the mounting financial damages caused by the prolonged border blockades and discussed practical measures to remove administrative bottlenecks, simplify customs procedures, and streamline the movement of commercial cargo.
Over the past ten months, major commercial gateways—most notably the Torkham and Chaman border points—were repeatedly closed due to border skirmishes, political friction between Islamabad and the Afghanistan administration, and stricter visa and document requirements imposed on truck drivers.
These disruptions left hundreds of freight vehicles carrying perishable agricultural goods stranded at the border for weeks, resulting in substantial financial destruction for both Afghan and Pakistani exporters.
During the meeting, Pakistani officials recognized that the persistent blockades had not only crippled bilateral commerce but also pushed regional trade toward alternative transit corridors, eroding Pakistan’s status as a primary transit hub for Afghan trade.
Consequently, reopening the borders is seen as a critical economic imperative to safeguard private sector investments, revive cross-border supply chains, and foster relative stability along the shared frontier.
With the implementation of this directive, freight traffic, import-export operations, and broader regional transit connecting Central and South Asia are expected to normalize in the coming days.
