Tajikistan’s national news agency Khovar, citing the country’s Ministry of Transport, has reported that Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan have reached an agreement to establish a trilateral transport corridor aimed at expanding road freight and strengthening economic cooperation.
Kabul 24: According to the ministry, the understanding was first reached during earlier meetings between Tajik Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim and his counterparts from Iran and Afghanistan.
Officials described the initiative as serving the economic interests of all three countries by improving road transport links.To follow up, a Tajik delegation led by Deputy Transport Minister Shoista Saidmurodzoda travelled to Iran.
Formal talks among representatives of the three countries took place in Mashhad on 14 and 15 July. Discussions focused on strengthening cross-border road transport cooperation, activating regional transit corridors, expanding trade and developing broader economic ties.
At the end of the negotiations, the parties signed a trilateral agreement establishing a road corridor linking Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan.
The document was signed by Shoista Saidmurodzoda (Tajikistan’s deputy transport minister), Reza Akbari (head of Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization) and Yar Mohammad Ramazan (representative of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation).
Under the agreement, the new corridor will enable commercial goods from Tajikistan and Iran to transit through Afghanistan.
A first pilot shipment is scheduled to take place within the next month to test customs procedures, border controls and coordination among the transport authorities of the three countries.
A permanent trilateral working group has also been created to remove potential obstacles, monitor implementation of the agreements and propose further improvements to the route.
The three countries plan to upgrade border infrastructure, reduce waiting times for freight trucks, simplify document issuance for drivers and develop a joint transport insurance system.
Officials noted that the corridor could later be extended to other Central Asian countries and China.
The next meeting of representatives from the three sides is expected to take place in Kabul in late October or early November 2026 to review progress on the agreements.
