Trump Envoy Proposes Replacing Iran with Italy in 2026 World Cup to Mend Ties with Meloni

According to a report by the Financial Times, a senior envoy to U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that the Italian national football team replace Iran in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Kabul 24: The proposal is framed as part of broader efforts to repair strained relations between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Paolo Zampolli, the U.S. special envoy for global partnerships and an Italian-American, confirmed to the Financial Times that he has raised the idea directly with President Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,” Zampolli said. “I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a U.S.-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”

The plan comes amid recent tensions between Trump and Meloni, which reportedly escalated following the U.S. president’s public criticisms of Pope Leo XIV in connection with the ongoing war involving Iran. Sources familiar with the matter told the Financial Times that bringing Italy into the tournament—co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico—could serve as a diplomatic gesture to strengthen ties with a key European ally.

Italy, one of the most successful teams in World Cup history with four championship titles (1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006), failed to qualify for the 2026 edition after losing in the UEFA playoffs.

Iran, despite domestic challenges and the impact of regional conflict, had previously secured qualification. However, questions have been raised about whether Iran will ultimately be able to participate fully due to political and security concerns.

As of now, no official reactions have been issued by the White House, FIFA, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), or the Iranian Football Federation regarding the proposal. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had stated just last week that Iran would “for sure” compete in the tournament, though the situation remains fluid.

The story has sparked widespread discussion in international media about the intersection of politics and sports. Critics view the suggestion as an inappropriate politicization of football, while supporters argue that Italy’s rich football heritage and the hosting context make the idea justifiable on sporting grounds.

Any actual replacement would require careful review under FIFA’s regulations and coordination among the tournament’s organizers.

The 2026 World Cup will feature an expanded format with 48 teams, promising to be one of the largest sporting events in history. At this stage, Zampolli’s proposal remains an informal idea under discussion, and its feasibility and future are uncertain.
