Recent statistics from the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan reveal a dramatic and unprecedented surge in the country’s grain exports to Afghanistan and other regional nations this year.
Kabul 24: According to official reports, during the first eight months of 2026, Kazakhstan’s grain exports to Afghanistan experienced a staggering 4.4-fold increase equivalent to a 340% growth—reaching a total volume of 655,000 tons.
This significant development positions Afghanistan as one of the most vital and strategic export destinations for Kazakh grain across the region.
Kazakhstan Railway authorities and transport officials reported that between January and August of this year, a total of 9.3 million tons of grain was transported via the country’s rail network. This volume of rail transit represents a 13% increase compared to the same period last year, demonstrating substantial improvements in transit infrastructure and the operational capacity of the national rail fleet.
Local Kazakh media highlighted these promising figures, noting that markets in Central Asia and China served as key drivers behind this overall export expansion. Reports indicate that grain shipments to neighboring Central Asian nations jumped by 37%. Meanwhile, growing market demand in China fueled a 34% rise in grain exports to the eastern neighbor during the same eight-month timeframe.
This sharp rise in exports to Afghanistan, alongside steady commercial growth with China and Central Asian neighbors, underscores Kazakhstan’s successful economic diplomacy in diversifying target markets and consolidating its status as the regional granary.
Industry experts attribute this growth to streamlined customs regulations, upgraded rail corridors, and enhanced transit logistics—all of which play a crucial role in supporting food security throughout Afghanistan and surrounding nations.
